“Again, I apologize for any inconvenience I caused you this afternoon. It was extremely unprofessional of me.” Timothy was doing his best to try and smooth things over with the caterer he had so completely ignored that afternoon. He was sitting in a quiet corner of the hotel restaurant, cell phone pressed to on ear, with his laptop on the table in front of him.

“I’d be lying if I said it was no trouble at all,” admitted Dominic Perez on the other end of the line. “I ended up losing an entire afternoon of work. It would’ve been worth it in exchange for the publicity your article would’ve provided, but now I’m stuck playing catch up and have nothing to show for it.” The man sounded understandably upset.

“I would still like to interview you for the article.” Timothy knew he had to be ginger as he moved forward, otherwise he risked worsening the relationship with Mister Perez. “I understand that you and your spouse are extremely busy people, and I apologize again for wasting your time before.”

“I’m willing to try again. I want to give you the benefit of the doubt, I really do. But as you’ve said, I’m really busy. If you stand me up again I’m going to have no choice but to go to someone else with my story.” There was no malice in the voice on the other end of the phone line, he was just stating facts. Facts that caught Timothy off guard.

“Someone else?”

“Do you think you’re the first journalist to approach me? I’ve had several other offers over this last week. All of them seemed incredibly eager, some of them even offered money. I agreed to talk to you because my father put you in contact with me.”

Timothy got the distinct feeling that the other man didn’t even want to be talking to him right now. There was every possibility that someone else had encouraged him to take the phone call when it had come through. If that was the case then he needed to proceed with caution and be careful not to risk damaging this contact again.

“Of course, I’m sorry. Why don’t you allow me to treat you and your husband to dinner? I’m staying at the Forest Hotel, do you know it?”

Dominic broke into laughter. The kind of laugh that made Timothy feel as if he had asked a stupid question.

“I’m sorry,” said Dominic after a long moment. “Yes, I know the Forest Hotel. I’m pretty sure everyone on the island knows it.”

“If you’d like, I can make dinner arrangements for the three of us here tonight. We can talk over dinner. I can ask some casual questions about your business and your involvement with the Anniversary Celebration?” Timothy tried to soldier on despite the blow to his ego. He didn’t like appearing ignorant in front of others. It made him feel small and idiotic. Especially right now after everything that had happened this afternoon.

“I don’t think we can afford to turn down an offer like that,” said Dominic, the sound of laughter still clinging to his voice.
